    ITT: I recommend music

Post by Alex on Wed Sep 05, 2012 7:16 pm

Essentially, you post a song or an album (if I don't know it or don't know it well, I'll listen to it) that you like, and I recommend another song or album (or maybe even an artist) that you might like based off of what you posted.

I can try my best with rap-I don't know it well, but I do know some stuff-but I can tell you beforehand that I don't know shit about country and probably won't be able to recommend anything unless it is similar to Bob Dylan or Neil Young, or perhaps it's by Bob Dylan or Neil Young.

I know the most about Rock, Alternative, and experimental stuff, but I am totally willing to step out of my comfort zone and look.
Don't worry about asking me to find too much stuff. I will decide what is and what isn't too much.

    Go.

the black keys, cage the elephant, beastie boys

those are just my top three played last.fm artists. any suggestions for just some new music would be cool.

It's hard to find newer artists that do bluesy stuff like the Black Keys, but you might want to try The Raconteur's new album, Consolers of the Lonely*. And then, of course, Jack White played a lot of blues guitar in his work with The White Stripes**.
I don't know if this one is a little bit of a reach, but iTunes suggests Broken Bells*** in the Listeners Also Bought section.
And, as always, you could also check out some other stuff by The Black Keys--Brothers is a fantastic album, and I hear Attack & Release is also good.

For Cage the Elephant, the instrumental piece of Aint No Rest For The Wicked reminds me of some of Beck's earlier work, such as Mellow Gold**** and Odelay*****. You could also try some stuff by The Red Hot Chilli Peppers******, and maybe even some stuff by Sublime. Don't know about Sublime though, that's iffy.

For the Beastie Boys, Beck-Odelay. The album incorporates some rap (especially the song "Where It's At").

TLDR? Specific songs from my suggestions:

*Songs from the album Consolers of the Lonely:
    Consoler of the Lonely
    Salute Your Solution

    **Songs from The White Stripes:
    Seven Nation Army
    Hello Operator
    The Hardest Button To Button
    Blue Orchid
    Icky Thump

    ***Broken Bells:
    The Ghost Inside
    Your Head Is on Fire
    Mongrel Heart

    ****[*]Beck:
    Loser
    Where It's At
    Nausea
    Devil's Haircut

    ******The Red Hot Chilli Peppers:
I haven't listened to them in a while, but I should have some songs posted for you to try out soon.

Let me know if you don't like any of this stuff; I can try again.
Also, let me know if you liked them. I can go into specific albums and other stuff you might like by those artists.

I can give it a try, if you want. I may not like rap much, but I am still able to draw connections between musical sounds and textures, still able to tell what's good writing and what isn't, and I'm certainly still able to use various places on the internet to find similar stuff. It just means it won't come quite as easy as recommendations that I would make for stuff like what Tet posted, or oldies bands, or just anything in the rock universe.
Plus, if it's critically acclaimed (ex: in Rolling Stone's top 500 album of all time or top 100 albums of the decade) I know about it.

i just prefer rap at the moment. it's not like i'm diametrically opposed to listening to other genres, i just like rap the most of all.

    doesn't that get boring?

nope. rap can be pretty diverse, despite what most people think.

I generally steer clear of rap, metal, country, disco, and dubstep.

If this is a recommendation request, you should at least give one band or even a single song that you like and might want to hear more of said kind of thing.
